I started compiling possible playlists for the „Summertime Madness Open Air“ of our club villaWuller, but as I will go for a different vibe for that gig, I spontaneously recorded the mix, because it seemed to be worth it.

It starts around 160 bpm and speeds up in the second half up to 174 bpm for the last tracks, so it´s footwork, jungle & classic dnb. My starting point were actually the last two tracks and Rashad´s, because they sample „Summer Madness by Kool & the Gang. So from then on, my selection was geared towards a laid back vibe, kinda classic 90s, many 70s funk & soul samples, lush epianos and synths, many hip hop-influences.

It spans from the mid-90s until today and contains a lot of personal favorites that I have a special connection with. So there are a few tracks that I already used in a previous mix, which is something I strictly avoided until now. But as this mix wasn´t planned for recording, there they were, right in the middle of the playlist and I thought, what the heck, noone cares but me.

Usually I dont publish very spontaneous mixes like this, but I will probably change my general attitude towards putting out more, but less „perfect“ mixes. I have so many playlists that I never recorded, because I always thought I want to work on them some more, but never did. I think I should change to a more frequent rate and as this mix shows, I sure can without sacrificing quality.

One more thing: The intro was made from an interview with Congo Natty some time back. I´ve used it live a few times and I needed something to make the start of the mix a bit more interesting, so I just used it for that.

Myom ist zurück mit einem neuen Mix: Wie der Titel ‚For Lovers not Fighters‘ schon andeutet: Es geht atmosphärisch und deep zu im Grenzland zwischen DNB, Jungle und Footwork. Mit Tracks von Om Unit, Machinedrum, Danny Scrilla u.v.a
Brandneue Tracks in einer Selection, die Myom immer schon mal in einen Mix packen wollte. Der Mix startet noch ziemlich uplifting, taucht dann aber nach 15 Minuten in tiefere Gewässer ab.

In Myoms neustem Podcast geht es wieder einmal um Grenzüberschreitungen: Eine Stunde feinster Juke-Drum&Bass und Footwork-Jungle!

Seit kurzem experimentieren Producer wie Fracture, Om Unit / Philip. D. Kick, Machinedrum und einige andere mit der Fusion von zeitgenössischem Drum&Bass und Oldschool-Jungle mit dem Sound der Juke & Footwork-Szene, die sich in Chicago aus dem Ghettohouse heraus entwickelt hat.

Myom @ SWOOP – Juke & Trap Music @ Grüne Rakete

Das Plakat ist zuviel der Ehre, ich headline nicht, sondern halte mich nur vornehm im Warmup dieses neues Formats auf 🙂

Durch das Internet haben es in den letzten beiden Jahren zwei Musikgenres geschafft, vom Nischenphänomen zum weltweiten Hype aufzusteigen: Die Rede ist natürlich von Juke/Footwork und Trap Music.

Die Wurzeln von Trap Music gehen fast zehn Jahre zurück, als Dirty-South-Rapper wie Gucci Mane auf Beats rappten, die klangen wie eine minimalistische Version von Crunk: Die 808-Kick ersetzte die Bassline, einfache Melodien traten den überdrehten kommerziellen Produktionen gegenüber.

Juke existierte ebenfalls fast ein Jahrzehnt nur als Fußnote zu Chicago House. Einige Freaks aus den Ghettos von Chi-City pflegten weiter den extrem schnellen Tanzstil, der nicht mit der House-Music-Welle nach Europa hinübergeschwappt war. An diesen Stil passten sie ihre Musik an und heraus kam eine hyperaktive neue Musik, die klingt, als käme sie mit der Zeitmaschine direkt aus der ferneren Zukunft zu uns: Triolische Kickdrums, knatternde Hihats und zerstückelte Vocal-Samples aus Rap-Songs.

Zwei Styles, die beide für sich zwar fresh, aber nur schwer verdaulich wären, hätten sich nicht in den beiden vergangenen Jahren immer mehr Produzenten mit unterschiedlichen Backgrounds dieser Musik zugewandt. Das britische Label Planet Mu machte mit diversen Releases als erstes in Europa auf den Sound von Juke aufmerksam, woraufhin Produzenten aus der Dubstep- und Drum & Bass-Szene den unverbrauchten Einfluss nutzten, um ihre festgefahrenen eigenen Genres neu zu interpretieren. Das gleiche gilt für Trap Music. Nachdem Produzenten wie Flosstradamus und Baauer über das Internet Berühmtheit erlangten und inzwischen nur noch ausverkaufte Shows spielen, nehmen sich auch die etablierten Kräfte im US-Rap des Hypes an. Kanye Wests Album strotzt nur so vor Verweisen auf Trap, während er sich auch von Juke-Producern remixen lässt. Täglich laden tausende Amateurproduzenten ihre eigenen Tracks bei Soundcloud hoch, ohne dass irgendjemand noch den Überblick behält.

Wie gut sich die beiden Styles ergänzen, bewies dieses Jahr Om Unit mit seinem Set auf dem Sónar Festival, wo er ein wildes Amalgam mit dem bestem aus Trap, Jungle, Dubstep und Juke auflegte. (Nachzuhören hier: https://bit.ly/PDAsoD)
Gespannt verfolgen auch wir, die Trierer DJs Jet Jaguar und G-Rek, die rapide Entwicklung der Genres und tun mit der Swoop!-Party unseren Teil dafür, dass die neuen Styles nicht nur daheim vorm Rechner, sondern auf dicken Anlagen laufen, denn so sollten sie gespielt werden.
